How fixed annuity rates are determined

Rates are set by the insurance company. They change over time. Here is what the words mean in plain English.

Current interest rate

The rate the company credits at a given time. It is usually guaranteed for a stated period, then may change.

Initial rate

The rate for a set time after you buy. Sometimes it includes a temporary bonus that is higher than later rates.

Renewal rate

The rate after the initial period ends. The contract explains how renewals are set. Ask what the company credited on similar contracts last year.

Minimum guaranteed rate

The lowest interest rate the contract promises. It is written in the annuity. Index strategies also use caps, participation rates, or spreads—those can change by period as the contract allows.

Why two people see different numbers

Premium size, issue age, state rules, product series, and issue date all matter. A website figure is not your personal rate.
